Present Employment

Self-Employed Consultant.  My areas of emphasis include the assessment and treatment of stress-related conditions, including the treatment of clinically severe anxiety disorders; as well as forensic consultation to the courts with respect to (a) psychological consequences of motor vehicle accidents, sexual assault/harassment, physical assault, as well as other trauma, (b) psychological diagnosis, (c) mental competence, and (d) family court matters. 

Adjunct Appointments

Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia.  I train psychiatric residents, psychology interns, and psychology graduate students in behavioural assessment and therapy, serve on dissertation committees, and conduct a small research program (1985-present).

Adjunct Professor, Department of Psychology, Simon Fraser University.  I have taught the doctoral course, special topics in civil forensic psychological assessment, in their forensic clinical psychology program, and occasionally serve on dissertation committees.  

Adjunct Professor, Department of Psychology, University of British Columbia.  Upon request, I have taught a graduate course on forensic assessment of psychological injuries.

Director, Health Psychology Clinic and subsequently Anxiety Disorders Clinic, UBC Hospital.  Administrative and clinical responsibility for outpatient clinics that treat 150-250 patients with anxiety disorders each year.  Supervision of registered psychologists, psychology interns, psychiatric residents, post-doctoral fellows, and psychology practicum students. (1984-2005).

Director, Psychology Residency Training, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.  Administrative responsibility for an American Psychological Association Accredited Psychology Residency program (1988-2005).

Consulting Psychologist Forensic Psychiatric Services, Box 500 Lougheed Highway, Port Coquitlam, B.C.  Assessed psychiatric remands regarding diagnostic, neuropsychological, fitness to stand trial, and diminished responsibility issues.  Provided individual psychotherapy to patients adjudicated as not guilty by reason of insanity. Private Consultations in Personal Injury

            I have been retained by both plaintiff and defense counsel to provide consultations in personal injury cases regarding disability, relationship of the disability to a specified cause, and prognosis with respect to psychological conditions secondary to motor vehicle accidents, other accidents, physical and sexual assault, and sexual harassment.  My qualifications have been accepted in the British Columbia Supreme Court and by the Worker's Compensation Board review panel.  I have treated numerous victims of motor vehicle accidents with respect to posttraumatic stress disorder, driving fears and depressive conditions.  I have reviewed case files and provided quality reviews of psychiatric as well as psychological reports for legal counsel and insurance adjusters.  I have also devised treatment programs to be adapted and carried out by other therapists.

Private Consultations in Custody, Access, and Divorce

            I have been hired by the Ministry of Social Services and Housing as well as privately to provide assessments with respect to custody and access, child protection matters, parenting capacity, and with respect to the psychological functioning of adults in divorce proceedings.  My qualifications have been accepted in both Provincial and Supreme Court.  In response to a request from the Ministry of Social Services and Housing, I have reviewed and offered a written opinion on relevant published material concerning the psychological impact on children of adoption and disrupted custody. I have also been retained by the College of Psychologists of British Columbia to review the adequacy of other psychologists' custody and access assessments., and have served as a practice supervisor for practicing psychologists who have been ordered by the College to have supervision during their provision of such assessments.

Private Consultations in Ethics Cases

I have been qualified as an expert witness in the area of ethics in therapy, and have testified in a College of Psychologists of British Columbia disciplinary hearing about such issues.  I have also testified in front of the Committee to Investigate Physician Sexual Misconduct with respect to risk factors for sexual misconduct by psychotherapists.  I have also been retained by the College of Dental Surgeons to advise their disciplinary panels on matters of patient and employee harassment. 

Private Consultations in Criminal Proceedings

I have been hired by both defense and crown in murder cases to provide professional opinions on fitness to stand trial, diminished responsibility, and the adequacy of other psychologists' testimony.  My qualifications have been accepted in Provincial and Supreme Courts of British Columbia.

I have been hired to provide opinions on general mental health and likelihood for future criminality of individuals in immigration disputes.
